A fantastic final day at the inaugural America’s Fiesta in Cancun on Sunday 25th February saw Mexico crowned Champions on home soil!
The day kick off with two pulsating semi finals, first up an all South American affair as the host nation faced off against Chile, who’d defeated England on Socca penalties in their quarter final clash. On paper the match should’ve been a close match, with both teams showing their experience and class in the run up to the game, but ultimately the host proved to much to handle for their south American counterparts, running out convincing 5-0 winners.
In the other semi final, we saw a battle of European teams, with Hungary and Belgium aiming for their first ever Socca finals. It was the Hungarian team who would progressed, running out 6-1 winners in a massively one sided affair.
The third place match saw Chile beat Beligum 2-1 to secure not only the 3rd place position but also their guaranteed spot in the Socca World Cup 2024 in Oman.
The final match between Mexico and Hungary started out as a fairly nervous affair, with neither side wanting to make a mistake. The stadium was packed to the rafters with a majority of home fans, as they will the hosts to go further than their 3rd place finish at the Socca World Cup 2023 in Essen and bring home the first Copa America trophy.
The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute as Mexico took a well deserved lead to the joy of the home crowd with a goal from Rafael Hernandez. They added to the scoreline with a second in the 35th minute to all but secure the title.
The celebrations in Cancun continued well in to the night to top off a fantastic tournament.
