Just weeks after guiding Mexico to victory at the 2025 Socca AmeriCup in Brazil, the national team’s head coach, Sergio López, reflects on what the win meant — and what’s next as Mexico prepares to host the 2026 Socca World Cup in Cancún.
A Defining Moment
When asked about his proudest moment in Socca, the coach kept it simple:
“The recent 2025 Americup championship in Brazil.”
It was a hard-fought tournament, and the title confirms Mexico’s place among the strongest teams in the world. For the players and staff, it was more than a trophy — it was a milestone for Mexican socca.
Coaching the national team wasn’t just a career move. For him, it was personal:
“I am honored to be representing my country in international competitions and guiding Mexico to victory.”
That sense of purpose has been key to building a committed, competitive team — one that’s earned the respect of fans across the globe.
A World Cup at Home.
The 2026 Socca World Cup will take place in Cancún, and for the coach, the location makes this tournament unique.
“It means a lot. My biggest goal is to become World Champion — and even more because it will happen in Cancún. The city supported us unconditionally when we won our first AmeriCup in 2024.”
He sees clear differences from previous editions:
Next Stop: World Cup Preparation
With the Socca World Cup just around the corner, the focus now shifts to getting the team ready.
“Our preparation will be like nothing we’ve done before. The first step was winning the 2025 AmeriCup. Now, we’ll strengthen the squad with more quality players and build a more complete approach.”
With momentum on their side and a World Cup to host, Mexico enters a new chapter — one filled with pressure, but also opportunity. After back-to-back AmeriCup titles and a clear sense of purpose, the team isn’t just aiming to compete — they’re aiming to win.
