RUSSIA, CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!

Congratulations to Russia, who became the second winners of the International Socca Federation World Cup, after a thrilling final in Rethmyno.

The Russians – fancied before the tournament after their superb showing in Lisbon last time out – beat Poland by the odd goal in five in front of a packed crowd in the Leisure Leagues Stadium, right on the banks of the Mediterranean Ocean.

They raced into a two goal lead early on, were pegged back to 2-1, and then went 3-1 ahead, before the Polish side, who as ever refused to accept defeat lightly, got a goal back to set up an incredible last few minutes.

The Poles, made up of players mostly from their league network, threw everything forward to try and get an equaliser – even substituting their keeper at one point to give an extra outfield player on the pitch.

In the end, though, the Russian defences stood firm, and there were joyous scenes at the final whistle.

Spare a thought too, for the Polish team who have now finished as runners up for two years in succession, having lost to Germany last time out. Maybe 2020 will be their year, third time lucky and all that?

Earlier in the day, Russia had beaten Greece to book their place in the final, but at least the hosts, who have given so much to the tournament, were able to claim the small consolation of third place, as they beat Moldova 2-1.

There will be a lot more reaction and pictures tomorrow, but for now we say:

Thank you Crete and Congratulations, Russia.
