Women’s Socca Cup Draws Closer

On June 1, 2023, the kick-off at Kennedyplatz in Essen city centre marks the beginning of the first edition of the Westenergie Women’s Socca Cup, hosted in collaboration with SGS Essen, a Women’s Bundesliga team, and sponsored by Westenergie. The event will take place in a pop-up arena that can accommodate approximately 3,000 fans free of charge. Following the tournament, the arena will also serve as the venue for the SOCCA World Cup for the next 10 days.

“With the Westenergie women’s Socca cup, we want to make our contribution to ensuring that women’s football receives the attention it deserves. In doing so, the tournament fits perfectly with our commitment to more equal opportunities in sport and work. The women who compete in this tournament are committed and motivated. They show team spirit and determination. And they are role models for many young girls in Germany,” says Brigitte Vogt, Head of Marketing & Brand at Westenergie AG.

It is also an important event for the International Socca Federation: ‘We are really excited to see great teams like Essen, Bielefeld, or Cologne playing in our arena. We have plans to host a Women’s World Cup in the future and will discuss further steps during our meetings in Essen,'” states a representative of the ISF.

For Christoph Köchy, President of the German Socca Association, the Westenergie Women’s Socca Cup represents a natural progression: “The first league we ever organised, Uni-Liga Goettingen 2005, has always been a mixed league. We never thought about calling it a men’s league or a women’s league, the game belongs to everyone who loves it. Thanks to Westenergie for the great support!'”
