A year ago this weekend the world was a very different place.
So we thought you’d appreciate a look back to 2019, and the final of the 6 a side World Cup in Crete, as Russia played out a thrilling game with Poland to sit on top of the world.
If you’d suggested then that major tournaments would pause in 2020 as the world was in the grip of an awful pandemic, then very few would have believed you – or even thought it possible.
So our suggestion to you is this: don’t think of the video and photos below as something from history, think of it as a beacon of hope, something that will be back in the future and will unite every corner of the planet like nothing else.
THE WORLD CUP FINAL, OCTOBER 20TH 2019, RETHMYNO, CRETE
We will prevail, just like Russia. The world will rejoice again, just like we did in Crete, with 3000 fans in the stadium, millions watching around the world on TV and online and just like the ordinary people who for one week in Crete did something extraordinary.
We had our live show for the evening – with the BBC’s Emma Jones and special guests.
This isn’t our world cup. It belongs to us all – and it will again.
Just close your eyes and imagine this in 2021.
